Top 25 Best Portable Water Filters For Outdoor Activities &  Emergency Survival

HydroBlu Go Flow Water Gravity Bag with Versa Flow Water Filter

Everyone should plan for always having access to a reliable source of crystal clear drinking water in case of any short term or long term emergencies.

Portable Water Filtering & Purification Overview

Whether you are hiking, camping, stranded outdoors or even in a long term survival situation, you cannot underestimate the ability to purify and turn "contaminated" water into clean drinking water.  The ability to do this in a portable way without having to store or transport large amounts of water is a significant capability that anyone should plan for in advance.

Inline Water Filters Provide Drinking Water When You Need It Most

Squeezing Water Out Of A Sawyer Squeeze Inline Water Filter

Whether your plan for long term emergency sources of water include collecting rainwater, lake, pond, river or creek water, water from pipes, wells, water puddles or other sources, you need a way to clean and purify the water before drinking it.  This article focuses on all of the different portable methods to purify water.

The easiest and most portable ways to purify "dirty" water include using water filters.  Portable water filters are great for any outdoor activities and can be essential during emergencies and disasters.  A lot of people are unaware of them or underestimate their importance.

There are several types of portable water filters and other water purification methods.  We list 12 categories of portable water purification below, and then rank only the best one to four products in each category providing their pros and cons and why we like them.  This equates to a Top 25 Portable Water Filter / Purification Methods list when you consider the top choices in the 12 categories.

Portable Water Filter Capabilities

No portable water filters are going to make water 100% safe, but you will be significantly safer using them against some of the common dangers.  The two most common drinking water dangers that you'll encounter in drinking water from creeks, ponds, rivers, lakes in developed countries like the United States are giardia and cryptosporidium which are two protozoan parasites that come from animal feces and can cause severe intestinal issues.  These parasites are over 2.0 microns in size.  All of the water filters on this page are capable of filtering out over 99.9% of protozoa and all bacteria.

Water Filter Micron Spectrum Chart

Portable Water Filters Cannot Filter Water To 100% Safe

Viruses are not typically found in North American waters or in municipal water supplies around the world.  Water viruses are much more common in developing countries or areas with extreme climates, like Africa, India, or Central America. If you are concerned about filtering viruses, 0.2 and 0.1 micron filters will not filter out any viruses.  The 0.01 to 0.02 micron hollow membrane or ceramic filters on this page will filter out most viruses, but there are some viruses as small as 0.004 microns.

None of the portable filters on this page will turn salt water into drinking water and most will not filter water-soluble chemicals (such as fluoride or chlorine) or some heavy metals.  We provide a couple of low cost homemade water distiller options below for distilling water if you need to convert salt water into potable drinking water.

Note that properly boiling water kills or inactivates viruses, bacteria, protozoa and other living pathogens, but it does nothing to remove chemicals and heavy metals. Both boiling and distilling water are so labor intensive compared to the ease and speed of portable water filters which are a lot more practical and convenient.

Boiling Water Is A Good Option But Portable Water Filters Are Much Easier

Tried & True Boiling Water To Make It Safe For Drinking

Chemicals and heavy metals are more of a threat the closer you live to more urban areas.  Farms spray pesticides and industries use chemicals that can get into the nearby ground water.  If you live in the suburbs and have a creek running through your property and you have a lot of neighbors up stream who fertilize their grass close to the creek and possibly dump trash into the creek, then you likely have chemicals and heavy metals in the creek water.  Remote mountain creeks are likely much safer from heavy metals and chemicals.

To reduce heavy metals and chemicals from water, activated charcoal filters can be used in addition to using micron particle filters.  Charcoal filters also help make the water taste better.  The water could be filtered to safe drinking levels and still have a bad taste, so charcoal can help to improve taste.

Some of the top filter choices below include 0.01 to 0.02 micron filters which will filter out most viruses, and some include activated charcoal filters as an option to help filter some chemicals and heavy metals.

Typical Performance Of Filter Pore Sizes

Refer to any particular water filter manufacturer specifications for exact specs, but below is a reasonable expectation of performance based just on filter pore size.

- 0.2 Microns (Very Good)
- Removes minimum 99.9999% of all bacteria such as Cholera, Botulism (Clostridium Botulinum), Typhoid (Salmonellla Typhi), Amoebic Dysentery, E. coli, Coliform Bacteria, Streptococcus, Salmonella
- Removes 99.9% of all protozoa such as Giardia, Cryptosporidium, Cyclospora

- 0.1 Microns (Better)
- Removes 99.99999%* of all bacteria
- Removes 99.9999%* of all protozoa

- 0.02, .015 & 0.01 Microns (Best)
Removes 99.997% of viruses
- Removes 99.99999% of all bacteria
- Removes 99.9999% of protozoa

- Activated Carbon/Charcoal - Added With A Hollow Fiber Membrane Or Ceramic Filter (Improves Filter Capabilities)
- Activated carbon adsorbs chemicals and heavy metals
- Removes / reduces unhealthy organic compounds such as chlorine, pesticides, herbicides, gasoline, and diesel
Removes / reduces heavy metals such as lead, iron, cadmium, nickel, chromium, and zinc
- Improves the taste and color of the contaminated water
- Can make pool water drinkable by removing / reducing chlorine and other chemicals from the water
- Without a Micron Filter, Activated Charcoal can remove a high percentage of bacteria and protozoa, but not any viruses

Top 12 Portable Methods To Purify Water

To be fully prepared to have drinkable water in any situation, you really should be prepared with several of the methods listed below.  That way you will have several options as backups plus you can evaluate the water you are trying to purify and use the appropriate option.

1. Inline Water Filters
If you can only have one portable water filter, we recommend the inline water filter as they are the smallest, most versatile and portable water filters.  You can use them to drink water directly from a bottle or water bag, or as a water straw, or with a backpack hydration bag, or in combination with a gravity bag or bucket.

2. Bottle Water Filters
Bottle water filters are a good option if you want to carry a small amount of water with you (like on a hike but not in a hydration pack) and you want the ability to refill your water bottle with drinkable water along the way.  Water bottle filters have an advantage of being an easy method of carrying small amounts of water with the quickest "scoop and go" refill capability and you are back on the trail.

3. Water Gravity Kits - Bags
Water bags fold up to a small very portable size and add great capability to inline water filters.  Just scoop water into your gravity bag, hang the bag on a branch, attach the hose and inline water filter, release the clamp and let gravity do the rest to fill your water bottle, canteen, or other container(s), while you are doing other tasks.

4. Water Gravity Kits - Buckets
Gravity buckets can handle large quantities of filtered water per day.  They are well suited for providing drinking water for a lot of people as less trips are required to the water source (creek, lake, pond, well, etc).  Gravity buckets are perfect to have on hand for providing large quantities of filtered water for families and neighbors.

5. Pump Water Filters
Pump water filters with an intake hose have an advantage drawing water from shallow water sources like a water puddle or shallow stream where it may be difficult to scoop up water.  In addition, if you are sucking water directly through a water straw, water bottle, or inline filter, your mouth is doing all of the work, so it is nice to have a pump filter as an alternative.

6. Water Purification Tablets And Drops
Water purification tablets and drops are inexpensive, very small, and belong in your bug-out and EDC day bags and as a backup method to portable water filters and other methods.

7. UV Lights
UV sterilization technology can kill approximately 99.999% of germs such as bacteria, protozoa, and viruses.  UV lights can also eliminate up to 99% of germs on surfaces such as your smartphone, utensils, or keyboards. UV lights will not filter or reduce sediment, heavy metals, chemicals, pesticides, or dissolved pharmaceuticals.  Could be used as an extra layer of precaution to other filter types.

8. Straw Water Filters
Straw water filters are inexpensive and small.  With most straw water filters you either have to lay down or bend way down to sip water directly from the source such as a water puddle, stream, or lake, and they can be difficult to suck water directly and use compared to any of the above choices.  Even then, one is so small it should be considered for your EDC (every day carry).

9. Counter Top Water Purification Systems
Although they not as portable as some of the other choices, counter top water purification systems are excellent at removing micro-organisms, and they are a great choice for a more stationary location such as a counter top in a home, RV, bunker, or any "Bug-In" type locations.

10. Water Distillers
Water distillers are the only method listed here that can turn salt water into fresh drinkable water.  Properly distilling water removes and eliminates all of the bad things from water, but it is the most difficult method for purifying water.

11. Boiling Water
Boiling water is similar to using UV lights in that it kills or inactivates viruses, bacteria, protozoa and other living pathogens, but it does nothing to remove chemicals and heavy metals.  Even then, it is good to have the ability to boil water using portable methods.

12. Water Filter Pitchers
Most popular pitcher filters (such as ZeroWater, Pur, and Brita) do not remove bacteria, viruses, parasites, or other microorganisms, so we do not recommend these popular water pitchers.  However, keep reading to learn the one game changing water pitcher filter that we do recommend because it does remove viruses, bacteria, parasites, microplastics, lead, mercury, chlorine, fluoride, herbicides, pesticides, and more.

Combination Of A CNOC Water Bag Attached To A HydroBlu Versa Flow Inline Filter And Smartwater Bottle

CNOC Bag And Versa Flow Filtering Water Into A Water Bottle

NOTES:

1. We have spent many hours researching and comparing the quality, features, and capabilities for all of the above 12 methods.  For each of these methods, keep reading to learn which are the best one to four specific products in each category and decide which ones may fit your specific needs.

2. There are numerous other available products on the market cumulatively for these 12 methods some of which are popular name brands.  However, many of these did not make our list due to inferior capability, durability, or lack of features.  The ones we list below are the very best, and any of them are great choices in our opinion.

3. If you really want to be prepared to always have clean drinking water, we recommend to accumulate at least one of each of the first six types (Inline Filter, Water Bottle Filter, Gravity Bag, Gravity Bucket, Pump Filter, and Tablets/Drops) in your stockpile.  You can never have too many options and backups with different capabilities when it comes to having access to clean drinking water.

Top 25 Best Portable Water Filters And Other Purification Methods

I. Inline Water Filters

1. HydroBlu Versa Flow - Inline Water Filter

You can't beat the quality / value proposition of the HydroBlu Versa Flow.  We very much like its low cost for a quality all-in-one kit (approx. $25) includes bucket adapter, collapsible canteens & more.  The Versa Flow has the unique feature of a built in "window" that allows you to see the "dirtiness" of the filter. It is also the only Inline filter that we know of where you can purchase an optional Activated Carbon Filter attachment if you are concerned about chemicals and hard metals.

2. Sawyer Squeeze - Inline Water Filter

The Sawyer Squeeze is another great choice in Inline water filters. The quality is just as good as the HydroBlu Versa Flow, but at a higher cost, plus it requires a separate purchase of a $3 coupling to make it threaded on both ends. However, two advantages the Sawyer Squeeze has over the Versa Flow are a built-in and removable push/pull cap, plus the Sawyer Squeeze can be purchased with a Faucet Adapter as one of the kit choices. Sawyer filters are also the most respected filters in the camping and backpacking community.

Sawyer Squeeze Water Inline Filter With Hydration Pack
Using A Sawyer Squeeze As A Gravity Feed Water Filter Requires A Sawyer SP150 Coupler

Bacteria/protozoa protection
- 0.1 Micron filter
- Filter up to 100,000 gallons

- Built-in and removable push/pull cap
- Spray water straight into mouth or bottle from pouch or standard threaded water bottle
- Backed by manufacturer's lifetime limited
- 100% of Squeeze Filter units individually tested three times to performance standards by Sawyer

Cons:
Does not filter out viruses
- Requires separate $3 purchase of Sawyer SP150 Coupler - That adds threads to the Sawyer Squeeze output end making it even more versatile to connect to water bags and/or water bottles on each end.  The HydroBlu Versa Flow in comparison is already threaded on both ends, not requiring a separate coupler.

2. Sagan Journey Water Filter Bottle

We really like that the Sagan Journey Water Filter Bottle filters viruses and is one of the very few filters that can be frozen without damaging it. Plus it comes with a pop up clear lid that makes it easy to keep the straw clean and includes a hook to attach the bottle to your backpack or other gear using a carabiner. But what makes this system particularly nice is that it has a special technology filter design (unique to Sagan Life filters) that incorporates an electro-positive charge which attracts and traps particles as small as a few nanometers.

Sagan Life Journey Water Filter Bottle Removes Viruses And Other Nasty Contaminants

The micron pore size of the filter is 2.0 (which seems large), but with the positive charge, the filter effectively removes particles as small as virus out of the water, while allowing a high drinkable flow rate. Sagan’s technology has been tested by independent water laboratories to consistently remove bacteria, virus, cryptosporidium, giardia, plus greatly reduces heavy metals and 118 harmful chemicals including lead, fluoride, chlorine, pharmaceuticals, and arsenic from water using this remarkable method.

We also like that it holds 34 oz, it has a very fast flow rate, it is ultralight and can provide clean drinking water in several ways. Simply fill the bottle from any fresh water source screw on the cap and start drinking.

You can also squeeze water out of the bottle and fill as many other containers as you desire. So just imagine your friends all have Nalgene bottles. 2. Cnoc Outdoors VECTO Water Containers

We really like Cnoc Water bags and its no wonder that they are very popular for many outdoor enthusiasts. They pack really small, are high quality and easy to fill and use with all of the popular inline water filters. They are so much better quality than the bags that you get with Inline filters. A lot of people buy both an orange and a blue Cnoc bag and use the orange bag as the dirty water bag and the blue bag for the clean filtered water bag. You can also just use one Cnoc bag as the dirty water bag and then use other containers such as Smartwater Bottles, Nalgene Bottles, canteens, or any other clean water container(s) of your choice.

IV. Water Gravity Kits - Buckets

1. Sawyer Products SP191 Point Zero Water Bucket Filtration System

We love the small, lightweight Point Zero Two Bucket Purifier Kit from Sawyer Products (model SP191) in that it can filter out bacteria, protozoa, and viruses at a rate of up to 170 gallons of clean water per day. It's unbeatable for larger groups and perfect to add to your emergency preparedness stockpile for use during any disaster.

This system produces incredibly clean water with its 0.02 micron filter. We also appreciate that you can connect the included faucet adapter and drink tap water directly from your sink during boil alerts or other emergencies when your drinking water is compromised. The Point Zero Two filter gets it's name from it's ".02" micron filter capability. It filters five times smaller than 0.1 micron filters.  This system is a great choice for larger groups where the water source is questionable, or when you need ultra-pure particle and bacteria filtration. It's also great for camping, hunting cabins, bunkers and RVs.

The Sawyer Products SP191 Point Zero Water Bucket System Makes A Great High Volume Water Filter
The Sawyer Products SP191 Point Zero Two Bucket Water Purifier Assembly Kit Makes A Great High Volume Community Water Filter

Pros:
Bacteria/protozoa/virus protection
0.02 micron filter
Filter over 3 million liters
- Up to 170 gallons a day makes this system great for larger groups
- Removes harmful bacteria (like salmonella), protozoa, or cysts like E. coli, Giardia, Vibrio cholerae, and Salmonella typhi.
- Housing material made from food grade ABS plastic is easily to field maintainable
- Filter output is 1-liter per minute with gravity, and with faucet water full faucet pressure
- Backed by a manufacturer's limited lifetime warranty

Cons:
None really, except you have to purchase the 5 gallon bucket(s).  The one that you install the filter hose in must be a food grade bucket.  You can purchase a 2nd bucket for scooping dirty water which would be faster than scooping water using smaller containers, but that's your choice.  Fill the filtered water in water bottles, canteens, water storage containers, etc.  Nalgene bottles work great to keep filtered water.

2. Sawyer SP180 Point One Water Bucket Filtration System

We love the Sawyer Water Filter Filtration Kit SP180 for the same reasons we love the above above SP191 Point Zero Two system. The main difference is that the filter in the SP180 system is basically a Sawyer Squeeze with a 0.1 micron filter typical for Inline Filters so it does not filter out viruses. The Sawyer SP180 was used extensively after the deadly typhoon Haiyan in the Phillipines in 2013 as pictured below.

The gravity-operated filter and fast flow rate mean anyone, anywhere can have clean water in a matter of seconds. The kit includes everything you need to attach the filter to a water faucet or any plastic bucket or container. Just 4-inches long and less than 8 ounces, the Sawyer Point One system can deliver 1 liter of clean water in 60 seconds. No more digging wells if there is a water source, no constructing sand filters, and no more purification chemicals. No one has to boil their water to make it safe ever again. Families are able to hook up their filter literally in minutes to almost any locally found container.

The Sawyer Water Bucket Filter System Has Been Used Extensively After Natural Disasters

VI. Water Purification Tablets And Drops

1. Potable Aqua Chlorine Dioxide Water Purification Tablets

You never know when a hurricane, flood, earthquake, or natural disaster might happen that could disrupt your normal water supply.

Water purification tablets are inexpensive and small making them easy to purchase and store in multiple places including your med kits, EDC bags, bug-out bags, your vehicles and also with you if you are hiking, hunting, or anywhere outdoors in the wilderness. They make an easy backup method to portable water filters and other water purification methods.

For water tablets and drops there are many choices, but just note that only Chlorine Dioxide can kill viruses, bacteria, cysts, and protozoa (giardia and cryptosporidium). The tablets have the following critical benefits that the drops do not have: The tablets provide a more precise dosage, improve the taste of water, kill bacteria, viruses and cryptosporidium, and meet EPA water purification standards

So it is a no brainer to get the tablets and not drops. The decision comes down to comparison of the two trusted tablet suppliers of Chlorine Dioxide tablets which are Katadyn and Potable Aqua.

Katydyn is trusted by many outdoor enthusiasts while Potable Aqua is used by military and relief organizations around the world. They are both popular choices and essentially the same product, so we would go with the one that is the lower price which is usually Potable Aqua brand.

Potable Aqua Tablets Purify Water In Emergency Situations

Potable Aqua Chlorine Dioxide Water Purification Tablets Are Inexpensive, Small, And Great For Water Purification During Hurricanes, Floods And Other Disasters, And For Emergency Survival, And Doomsday Prepping

Pros:
- Inexpensive, small, and easy to stockpile in multiple locations - These tablets provide 2.6 times the oxidizing capacity of chlorine
- Leaves no aftertaste and actually improves the taste and odor of the water
- Only one tablet is required to treat one quart of contaminated water
- Available in 20 Tablet or 30 Tablet sizes

Cons:
Drinking water treatment tablets take 4 hours to purify one quart (one liter) of water for emergency water purification
- You may need to prefilter the water if it has a lot of sediment.

1. CrazyCap UV Water Purifier Cap

2. SteriPen Classic 3 UV Water Purifier

We like the SteriPen Classic 3 UV Water Purifier over the other portable UV Water purifiers because of its lower cost and it works on four AA batteries while all other models are charged via a USB cable. We can power this well beyond its 8000 treatment capacity (2113 gallons) using rechargeable AA Eneloop batteries along with our our foldable solar panel, power station, and battery charger.  We also like that it is small and it destroys over 99.9% of viruses, bacteria and protozoa.  You can charge one of the other model USB UV Water Purifiers directly from a portable solar panel, but will the built in battery really last years is the question and reason why we like this model with AA batteries.

The SteriPen comes with a 40 micron pre-filter which fits the openings of Nalgene and comparable wide-mouth water bottles. The pre-filter is needed to clean any water that is dirty with sediment. You could also use the SteriPen in combination with some portable filter types that do not filter viruses if you have a concern about possible viruses.

- Tapered end fits most commercial water bottles, canteens, or drinking glasses

Berkey Water Purification Systems Are Great Indoors Or Outdoors For Home or Cabin Use, Emergency Survival, Camping, Doomsday Prepping, And Anywhere You Want To Ensure You Have Safe Drinking Water

The Stainless Steel Berkey water purification systems come in six sizes from 1.5 to 6 gallons and are excellent at removing micro-organisms, chemicals, heavy metals, pesticides, and more.  They make a great choice for a stationary location such as a counter top although they are still easy to move.

The Berkey's are 5 to 10 times more expensive than cheaper plastic counter top models but they are more durable, easy to wipe clean, and the filters last approximately 10 times longer than other counter top brands.  More importantly, the Berkey products filter and purify water much better.

Berkey Water Purification Systems Are Exceptional For Home, RVs & Bunkers
Berkey Water Purification Systems Are Perfect For Home, Bunker, Bug-out Locations For Emergency Survival, Unexpected Disasters And Doomsday Preppers

Important Note: Berkey Filters (the manufacturer) has compiled a database of all of the municipal water systems in the US (currently all states are included except New York) that will tell you what contaminants are in your tap water supply that exceed environmental standards. Pretty scary results for our zip code. Check out the Water Quality Results for your tap water at the following link:

Water Quality Search (enter Your Zip Code to see what contaminants are in your tap water)

Berkey Filters also created a calculator to help you pick the correct size Berkey system if you are interested in one of their water purification systems:

X. Water Distillers

Properly distilling water pretty much removes and eliminates anything bad (bacteria, parasites, viruses, heavy metals, chemicals, etc.) from the water. Although you can find water distillers for sale, they are not worth the cost in our opinion. Instead, we recommend that you make your own homemade water distiller like one of the two options below. Both of these models are portable and durable for home use, emergency survival, or bug-out location water distilling.

Smartwater Bottle

The Smartwater bottle is a disposable water bottle that can be found in many grocery stores, gas stations, and other roadside stops. It’s one of the most common bottles for the backcountry due to its lightweight and sleek design, the fact that it threads with popular water filters, and because it’s just so inexpensive.

The Smartwater bottle is not a filter, but many hikers and backpackers use them to fill with clean drinking water using their Inline filters.  You can attach a gravity bag, squeeze bag or any other dirty water container with 28mm threads to the input of a threaded Inline filter, and screw on a Smartwater bottle to the output side of the filter.

Some people like to use them on the "dirty" water side as well as they are easy to fill from your water source and can replace the function of the gravity or squeeze bags.  The Smartwater bottle works great with just it and a Sawyer Squeeze.  Just fill the Smartwater bottle with lake or creek water, etc., screw it on the input side of the Sawyer Squeeze, and then just pull out the push/pull cap on the Sawyer Squeeze to drink.
