This article is part 4 of 14 in our series that cumulatively includes details on the vast amount of battery powered capabilities anyone can easily maintain for many years after a Doomsday event.

Overview - Best Rechargeable Batteries & Chargers

In this article, we have researched and picked out the best AA, AAA, C, D, & 9V battery chargers & rechargeable batteries that you can keep charging almost indefinitely with no available commercial AC power.

The solution we describe in part 1 of our Solar Powered Prepping Series is to use a 60W to 120W foldable solar panel to keep a small LiFePO4 power station charged up to 2000 times (over many years). Then just use a fraction of that power station's capacity to keep charging small rechargeable batteries over and over again using battery chargers as described in this article up to 2100 times per battery.

With several battery chargers and plenty of small batteries, you can keep small battery operated devices running for many years. If you really want to be prepared for any potential long term loss of commercial power caused by a catastrophic event on the nation's power grid, then do not overlook this capability.

If you are concerned about an EMP (electromagnetic pulse event), your power stations, battery chargers and critical devices can be stored in faraday bags to protect them.

A Small Power Station Can Power Multiple Battery Chargers

A small solar powered power station can power multiple battery chargers simultaneously and keep your AA, AAA, C, D & 9V batteries charged for years in a Doomsday scenario.

Rechargeable Batteries & Chargers - Criteria

For small common batteries such as AAs & AAAs, we still recommend NiMH Rechargeable Batteries more than lithium-ion batteries when possible. NiMH batteries are still more cost effective, plus the current number of recharges for Eneloop batteries (2100 recharges) plus over 10 year battery life is out of this world amazing!

In comparison, the typical estimated life of a Lithium-ion rechargeable battery is about two to three years or 300 to 500 charge cycles, whichever occurs first.

The standard Eneloop NiMH AA & AAA batteries are Low Self Discharge (LSD) type and maintain 70% of their full charge after 10 years of non-use, plus they can be recharged many more times than other battery types and that is what makes them currently the best choice.

To get the longest longevity and best bang for your buck, with C & D cell batteries we recommend that you use C & D cell spacers/adapters that convert AA batteries into use as a C or D cell battery, and then continue to use your AA rechargeable batteries in the adapters.

For 9V batteries, Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries are the best choice as the longevity is as good or better than NiMH plus the battery mAh (milliamp hours of battery capacity) are about 3 times more.

Panasonic Eneloop AA Batteries Have 2100 Cycles And Are Low Self Discharge Maintaining 70% Charge After 10 Years Of Non Use

The current number of recharges for Eneloop batteries is 2100 recharges over 10 years.

Important Battery Charger Criteria:

    • Individual battery charging: We recommend battery chargers that charge each battery individually. If you use a battery charger that charges batteries in sets of 2 or 4, that means the batteries that reach a full charge 1st will continue to receive charging current until the last battery is charged and that is not good for the health of those batteries.

    • Battery Charge Indicator: We recommend that the battery charger have some kind of visual indicator for batteries being charged and when they are fully charged.

    • Automatic shutoff: If you do not get a battery charger with an auto shutoff capability, then you will have to keep an eye on the battery charger to disconnect it from power when the batteries reach full charge versus automatically powering off to protect your batteries.

    • Max number of batteries that can be charged simultaneously: Four batteries at a time is typically a good number, but you might at least one charger that can charge more batteries (8, 12, or 16) at a time. Remembering the military term "Two is one and one is none", it is always wise to have more than one battery charger as a backup. If you need to charge more than 4 batteries at a time, one option is to just pull out one or more of your backup chargers. Or if you desire, purchase larger chargers that can charge 8 or more batteries at a time.

    • Built In Protections: Look for as much protection as possible such as auto shut off protection from over charging, reverse polarity, short circuit, over-voltage, over-current, over-heat and non-rechargeable batteries.

    • Good reputation: A high number of very good user reviews and high ratings are important, especially if you do not recognize the company or brand.

Considering these criteria, we picked out the best battery chargers that are available.

A Good Battery Charger Will Have Significant Built In Protections

A good battery charger will have protections such as auto shut off protection from overcharging, reverse polarity, short circuit, over-voltage, over-current and over-heat.

Top 10 Rechargeable Batteries, Chargers & Accessories

1. Best AA & AAA NiMH Batteries - Standard Panasonic Eneloop (White) Batteries

Remember that Low Self Discharge NiMH easily beats Lithium-ion in AA & AAA number of recycles, so if you easily want the best longevity for your AAs and AAAs and you want to save the most money, then stick with the standard Eneloop batteries and hold off on rechargeable Lithium AA and AAA batteries.

What really stands out about the standard Eneloop AA & AAA (white) NiMH batteries is that they will outlast all other brands and types by a long shot. Each fully charged Eneloop battery lasts about the same as an Alkaline battery and can be recharged up to an amazing 2100 times!

You will save so much money using these, since 1 AA or 1 AAA Eneloop battery equals as many as perhaps 2100 of their Alkaline battery equivalents. In comparison, the Duracell 2450 AA Rechargeable battery is a top rated battery but it can only be recharged up to 400 times.

We also really like that these Eneloop batteries are Low Self Discharge (LSD) types, meaning you can charge them fully, put them on a shelf, and 10 years later they will still have 70% of the original charge. After 1 year they still have 90% charge, after 3 years 80%, 5 years 75%, and 10 years 70%. That is amazing.

Note: As an alternative, you can pay for the higher cost Eneloop Pro (black) LSD NiMH batteries. They last longer per charge than standard Eneloop (white) batteries but they only have up to 500 recharges. This means the Eneloop Pros have significantly less longevity in the number of recharges and years of use, plus they do not maintain their charge as long as they only have 85% capacity of full charge after 1 year of non-use.

AA & AAA Eneloop (White) Batteries Are The Best Available Rechargeable Small Batteries

Standard Eneloop AA & AAA (white) NiMH batteries will outlast all other brands and types by a long shot making them perfect for doomsday survival.

AA Eneloop Batteries Can Double As C & D Batteries With Eneloop Spacers/Adapters

Eneloop C & D Spacers create C & D cell batteries by simply installing AA Eneloop batteries inside the spacers.

Pros:

- No other small battery comes close to the standard Eneloops for longevity.

- Each AA and AAA Eneloop battery (per charge) lasts about the same as an Alkaline battery. With 2100 recharges for each Eneloop battery, its a no brainer to only use Eneloop batteries for AA and AAA battery devices.

- Low Self Discharge (LSD) technology - fully charged batteries still have 70% of their battery charge after 10 years of non use.

- If you purchase the Eneloop C & D Spacers, you can fill all of your C & D cell battery needs by simply installing AA Eneloop batteries inside the spacers. You may have to change the C or D cell more often, but you can do that up to 2100 times per battery so the savings and availability of always having a working battery are extensive.

Note: See our pick #9 below for the DSLRKIT 3AA to D Size Battery Adapter. With this enhanced D cell adapter, you can use 1, 2, or 3 AA Eneloop batteries in parallel to gain more battery capacity (battery run time) as desired.

9. Best D Cell Battery Adapter - DSLRKIT 3AA to D Size Battery Adapter

The DSLRKIT AA to D-cell battery adapters are inexpensive and can be purchased in a 4-pack or 12-pack. You can use any kind of AA batteries in them (alkaline, lithium Ion, or rechargeable AA batteries of any brand).

We recommend that you use the exact same batteries (brand and type) and with the same charge. Obviously the best batteries to save the most money, plus to last the longest in long term Doomsday survival situations are the standard AA Eneloop batteries (our #1 pick above).

These D-cell battery adapters are solid in construction and since all of the battery slots are wired in parallel, you can create a D-cell battery by installing just one AA battery. You have the option to install a 2nd AA battery to get twice the battery capacity (and twice the run time on your device) or you can install 3 AA batteries to triple your device's run time compared to just using 1 AA per D-cell battery adapter.

The DSLRKIT Parallel Battery Adapter Is The Best Converter Of 1, 2 or 3 AA Batteries To A D Cell Size Battery

The DSLRKIT AA to D-cell battery adapters will create a D-cell battery by installing 1 to 3 AA batteries in them.

Modification Needed For Each AA to D-cell Adapter

The only complaint we have about this adapter is that without a simple modification, the AA batteries are very hard to remove if all 3 AA batteries are installed. You can push them in usually without much of an issue, but removing the batteries can be a pain if all 3 AAs were installed. With the modification made, you can have a set of really cool, easy to use cost-saving D-cell batteries (composed of three AA Eneloop batteries)

With all 3 AA batteries installed, it can be very difficult to get the 1st battery out as there is barely anything to "grab" on the top or bottom of the battery. Once one of the batteries is out, you can push the 2nd and 3rd batteries out through one of the other slot openings with no problem.

Don't let this discourage you as this adapter is solid and works great with a simple modification. You can always just only use 2 AA batteries (instead of all 3) if you do not want to make the modification. Once one battery is out, the other two are very easy to push out.

Just read the Amazon feedback and you can see where some people are slightly modifying each adapter by shaving off, filing or using a Dremel tool to grind one small crescent shaped moon at the top edge for taking out the first battery. We did make this modification on 8 of the 12 battery adapters that we received so that you can see what the modification looks like.

The 4 adapters in the middle of the picture below were not modified (yet), so you can see the white plastic top outer edge is uniform all the way around. For each of the 8 adapters shown below in the outer ring, using our Dremel Tool we made 1 small half moon cutout (at the top of 1 AA battery slot) facing the center of the picture. One of these half moon notches has a red arrow pointing right at the cutout.

Although you could use a small round file, saw or knife, a Dremel Tool with a small pointed stone bit did the job very fast. For each AA to D-cell adapter, all that you need to do is notch out a half moon cutout at the top (positive end) only in one of the 3 AA battery slots as shown in the picture below. On a couple of these we cut all the way to the metal contact but that does not cause any issue as the white plastic adapter is so strong and sturdy, it will not fall apart even if you cut or grind all the way to the metal.

Do This Simple Modification Of The AA to D-cell Adapter Using A Dremel Tool

This Makes 3 AA Battery Removal Much Easier

A simple and quick modification on the DSLRKIT AA to D-cell battery adapter using a Dremel Tool makes 3 AA battery removal much easier.
For each AA to D-cell adapter, all that you need to do is notch out a half moon cutout at the top (positive end) only in one of the 3 AA battery slots.

Pros:

- Solid construction.

- Convert any AA battery to a D-cell battery

- Option to use 1 AA, 2 AAs or 3 AAs for more battery capacity

Cons:

- A modification is required to make it easier to get the 1st of 3 AA batteries out (see above description of the modification).
