Why you might need it
Bivy covers are essentially instant personal shelters wherever you are. Bivys are perhaps the best survival prep for shelter that you can have. They are very portable and you can crawl into this bivy cover and be completely dry, even in rain and wind, on the forest floor, in mud, even laying in water!
This Woodland Camouflage Waterproof Bivy Cover is a waterproof, breathable camouflage bag with reinforced bottom that can be conveniently sealed up to keep you warm and dry.
This waterproof Camouflage GORE-TEX Woodland Bivy Cover will keep you warm and dry in a Doomsday survival, or camping situation and will improve the insulation capability of your sleeping bag. GORE-TEX is a waterproof, moisture-vapor-permeable material and all seams on this bivy cover are heat sealed.
This bivy cover will let condensation and moisture out but not in and will add approximately 5 to 10 degrees to your sleeping bag rating and will work great on most sleeping bags.
The dimensions of this bivy cover are 81-83" Long, 34-36" Wide (top) 27-29" Wide (foot) and it weighs less than 3 pounds. This is a cover all bag, but you can leave it unzipped at the top for venting.
This bivy cover will roll up relatively small. Depending on how you fold, roll, or pack it, you can expect it to be approx. 15" long by 4" diameter, or 12" long by 5" diameter. This bag is a component of the Military Sleep System as described in the Amazon listing.

This Woodland Camouflage Waterproof Bivy Cover is best for someone 6'-2", 250 lbs or smaller. In the Amazon questions & answers, one man said he was 6'-4" and 284 lbs, and he fit in the bivy with his sleeping bag, but he felt a bit snug. If you keep the bivy hood open and your face is exposed, you might need a mosquito head net.

"Best Affordable Lightweight Shelter."
"....These bivy covers are essentially instant personal shelter, wherever you are, whatever other assets you might have with you. So whether you also have a blanket, sleeping bag, tarp, tent, ground pad, or just the means to improvise any of these things, you can crawl into this bivy cover and be completely dry at least, even in rain and wind, on the forest floor, in mud, even laying in water(!). All I am suggesting here is that, most everything else for a shelter can be improvised, but a waterproof, breathable camouflage bag with reinforced bottom that can be conveniently sealed up would be a component that would be much harder to improvise. The bag itself is very well constructed with substantial fabric layers sandwiched and meticulously seam sealed. The zippers and snaps are also very high quality. The bag compacts at it's smallest to about the size of a football, and is, because of it's robust construction, somewhat on the heavy side (2 kgs?). So ironically, what makes it so durable also makes it a bit bulky and weighty compared to other alternatives. For this price, this is a great value and excellent investment. It's designed to fit TWO inner bags inside, so it is amply roomy enough for most sleeping bags. Wearing a light mesh veil over the head helps to prevent insect bites to the exposed face and to provide a slight bit of pre-warmth during cold nights."
"The REAL Deal! I bought this Bivy for a flip-flop hike of the New York Bear Mountain section of the A.T. I was expecting mild weather with possible rain, having done this section before. Previously I went with a tarp/trekking pole shelter and closed cell foam pad/fleece sleeping bag liner setup. With this setup my sleep system (fleece liner) got a little wet but really it's the wind that gets you. You know the wind I'm talking about! That 4 am howling wind that makes you feel like you're sleeping naked in a treetop. Armed with that knowledge, I bought this beauty. Waterproof, windproof and VERY breathable. GoreTex is amazing. My sleep system for this last late-August hike was this Bivy, a fleece throw you can buy at wal-mart for 5 or 8 bucks and a grommeted poncho that i staked out in a mini lean-to with my cheapo wal-mart trekking poles. My pack went under the lean-to and doubled as my pillow, the fleece blanket and my tired, sore body went into the bivy, my head and upper body protected from rain and whatnot. You can sit up and cook, repack, read etc, and only your (waterproof) legs stick out. I used a mosquito head net so I could keep the hood of the bivy open, but closing the hood would keep a good deal of those jerks out. So, im summation, if you like a minimal yet very modular sleep setup, stop wasting time and buy this bivy. Also it's very light and stuffs to about the size of football."
"100% Waterproof. I just used this bivy sack on a back country camping trip in the mountains of western VA. There was about 6 inches of snow on the ground and I laid my bivy right on top of it. No moisture got through the entire 3 days I was there. It also rained some, and you could see the rain just bead right off the bivy. It is 100% waterproof, rolls up to a decent size to strap on to the bottom of your pack, and I didn't have any problems with the zipper. Best bang for the buck!"
"This thing is freaking amazing! It is big enough to let you sleep comfortably and well, but not so big it was big and cumbersome to carry on you pack. When I first got it I took it out and slept in it in my backyard in late fall early winter. I had my 15 degree bag, thermarest trail scout pad, and a fleece blanket and slept well. I had the cover over my face and the zipper down about 6 inches to prevent condensation. In had no problems what so ever with it so far. I've got a winter camping trip planned and am excited to use it in the snow. This has been one of the purchases I've made. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a good quality bag."
