Benjamin Trail NP2 Air Rifle - Quick Summary

Pros

  • Very Quiet, i.e., "backyard quiet". Once you break it in (approx. 100 to 200 shots), one of or perhaps the quietest small game hunting air rifles of all pellet guns in the Gas Piston and Spring Piston categories.

  • Easier to cock than most other break barrel rifles. Only 28 lb. cocking effort.

  • Very powerful for small game hunting with 26 ft/lbs of muzzle energy.

  • Decent adjustable 2-stage trigger.

  • Highly accurate.

  • Variable scope works very well (although some shooters would prefer a Mil Dot reticle).

  • Leave it cocked all day while you hunt.

Cons

  • On the heavy side. Right at 10lbs with scope.

  • Typical of most Spring Piston and Gas Piston guns, the NP2 is a little more prone to recoil requiring re-tightening of stock and scope screws when accuracy starts to wander.

  • Requires artillery hold when shooting. Not a big deal, just learn the technique.

Our Take (click to expand)

This is a high quality, very quiet, very powerful, and accurate pellet gun that is perfect for hunting small game. This particular model Benjamin Trail NP2 is a "break barrel" rifle with a nitro gas piston which makes it quieter than normal spring-piston pellet guns.

Also, the nitro gas piston allows you to cock the gun, and leave it cocked (and ready to fire) all day long without causing any issue, and you can shoot whenever you are ready to take a shot with no reduction in power. This makes the nitro gas piston rifle better for hunting when compared to normal spring-piston guns where you cannot leave them cocked and ready to fire for extended periods or you'll damage the spring.

Also with a nitro gas piston, there is no having to deal with cartridges or air pumps. Note that all gas piston air rifles are NOT created equal! The Nitro Piston 2 has it all over the original Nitro Piston and almost every other gas spring on the market. Most gas springs have a reputation of being hard to cock, but the NP2 put an end to that.

According to airgun writer Tom Gaylord, it's the easiest-cocking gas piston he's ever shot. We own this rifle and agree. But they didn't stop the improvements there. They also improved the trigger so it feels like it's been tuned! Imagine that: A factory trigger that breaks crisp and clean. It has a significantly lighter trigger-pull.

As long as they were making improvements, they decided to make a better and more effective integral sound suppression system that really is quiet. You'll notice an immediate difference between the sound from your Nitro Piston 2 air rifle and the older Nitro Piston guns or other brands.

As with any gas piston air rifle, you'll need to break it in with approximately 100 to 200 shots before it quiets down. This air rifle has plenty of knock down power for small sized game out to 50 plus yards. There's one more thing, and it's really important. This gun is highly accurate.

When Tom Gaylord tested a Nitro Piston 2 at an industry show, he commented that he hit everything he aimed at. Isn't that what you want to do? We thought so! So, let's add up what you'll get in this great package: Easy cocking, fantastic trigger, powerful, accurate, and less noise. And, it's assembled in the USA.

The Benjamin Trail with the Nitro Piston 2 isn't a dream -- it's a dream come true for small game hunting and for prepping / long term survival. Hunters and Doomsday Preppers will appreciate the Benjamin Trail NP2 Air Rifle for hunting animals such as turkeys, raccoons, possum, rabbits, squirrels, and birds.

"Stupid not to get this one. It's almost boring hunting anymore. It's too accurate."

"Got this guy for Christmas along with the Crossman destroyer pellets and not only is the gun super accurate, when I shot an orange the whole thing blew up and there were pieces of it everywhere (I was about 15 yards out) I definitely recommend this gun for hunting or even just plinking even though this guy has way more power than needed for plinking."

"Excellent Pellet Gun. I don't care what any other review has to say. This pellet gun is the best break barrel I have ever shot. If you are looking for a gun that will put down rabbits, squirrels, and even raccoons (with good shot placement) at 30+ yards, this is the one for you. This gun shoots excellently with Crosman Domed Premier Pellets. Much more quiet than any break barrel I shot before, and is almost a tack driver at 30 yards. Sure, the scope isn't that excellent, but I bought a Monstrum 3-9X32 scope with illuminated reticle and integrated laser, and I am set. That scope was under $50. Besides, if you are buying a $270 pellet gun, you probably want to pick your own scope anyways. The trigger does the job, and I will definitely play with the trigger pull as the days go by. Excellent pellet gun. I would buy this again in a heartbeat."

(Review of Benjamin NP2 Wood version): "This is one hard hitting weapon. It is heavy, but I found the fit and finish to be excellent. I use it to eliminate tree rats. The included scope is more than adequate for my purposes. I sighted the weapon in at 35 yards. At 35 yards, it will hold a one inch pattern a shooting rest. Free hand is worse at about 2 inches. At 65 yards freehanded, it did 4 inches. The first 25 shots were loud, but it has steadily gotten quieter and I can now shoot it without the neighbors even noticing. As of right now, I don't see a better value in a pellet rifle. This is a serious piece of hunting equipment."

"Awesome gun! accurate and the new trigger is great! If you are on the fence get one you won't regret it."

"This gun is very accurate and priced below the competition I am very pleased with this purchase."

"What a nice rifle. It was everything as described. Nice fit, accurate, and functions great. Unless your shooting competition this is all the rifle you need."

"Was shipped fast and it shoots great very nice pellet gun , I've never had a pellet gun shoot 50 yards and hit bottles so easy."

(Review of Benjamin NP2 Wood version): "THIS GUN IS AMAZING. I got it to shoot in my backyard and occasionally I go hunting with it. I shoot at a distance of about 100 ft. and can get tight 1" groupings. This gun is really easy to cock and very quiet when shooting. The new CBT trigger is smooth and makes the world of difference when squeezing the trigger. The gun has a nice wooden stock which feels sturdy in your hands and looks great.. I'm 14 years old and my dad bought this gun for me. I couldn't have gotten a better gun. You will not be sorry if you get this gun."
