Why you might need it
You can catch fish with this spearfishing outfit even if you do not live near the ocean or a freshwater lake that is clear enough to dive under water to spear fish. Included in the YouTube videos below are some examples of how to spear fish unconventionally.
Having the ability to spear fish would be invaluable in a Doomsday survival scenario. A single pole model such as this one is superior to a multi section spearfishing pole in my opinion except that it is not as convenient to transport.
This particular spear fishing pole is one of Scuba Choice's top selling items and is made of Carbon fiber which is 40% Lighter in weight compared with fiber glass. Carbon fiber is also more durable than fiberglass, but fiberglass is a lower priced option.
This spear comes with a 3 Prong Barbed Paralyzer tip which is made of Stainless Steel and is 12" long with 8mm diameter thread. This spear measures 7' long and includes a black rubber sling. Some people prefer the single barbed tip over the 3 prong paralyzer tip, but both work well and are interchangeable.
See the recommended accessories below for spear tips, and snorkeling accessories (if you prefer to spearfish while swimming or diving). See the other models below for additional Scuba Choice spearfishing poles in 5', 6', and 7' lengths in carbon fiber or fiber glass, in one piece or two piece models, and with the different spear tip types.
When walking or wading through a marsh or swamp or along a creek or river bank, search for fish around grassy areas (or other places they can hide) and look for deeper holes, or holes or ledges created by rocks or logs. Catfish especially like to hide in holes.
On one of the episodes of the TV series "Naked and Afraid", they were in the Everglades in Florida and the guy speared two catfish on separate days by walking through water about 12" deep, but he speared the two catfish in a deeper "hole" in the water that he searched each day to see if fish were hiding in it.
The two participants (guy and lady) had made several primitive fishing & hunting spears similar to the 4-pronged primitive fishing spear shown in the second to last YouTube video below (the fishing spear in that video is made from bamboo but the same type of spear can be made from a long branch or sapling).
In "that same episode of "Naked and Afraid", they also killed a large Water Moccasin (Cotton Mouth) snake using the same spear. The guy pinned the snake down on the ground using one of the 4-pronged fishing spears, and then used a machete to behead it.
When spearfishing from a bank, fish can have a harder time seeing you if the sun is behind you and your shadow is off to the side and you remain still and wait for the fish to swim within range. Some fish are just easier to spear such as carp.
Learn how to make your own primitive fishing spears (see the last two YouTube videos below). This is a skill every prepper should learn as fishing spears are easy to make.
Sample Amazon Feedback (for Scuba Choice 5', 6', & 7' Spearfishing Poles)
(Pictured above: 7-foot one piece carbon fiber spear): "Great spear. I've had the 5 ft version of this spear and I loved it. The quality was excellent and I couldn't hope for a better deal. It was a bit pricey but you get what you pay for. If you are going to get one I'll advise you to keep a firm grip on it especially in deep water because it sinks like a stone which is how I lost my recent one. Overall it was a great buy.
(6-foot one piece fiber glass spear): "My son loved it got a big grouper with it in the keys last week."
(6-foot one piece fiber glass spear): "Don't have any complaints with it so far. Don't see how you can beat it for the price."
(5-foot one piece fiber glass spear): "OMG. The saying you get what you pay for is soo off when it comes to this I've shot everything from crappie (fresh water) to a 17in sea bass I fricken love this."
(5-foot one piece fiber glass spear): "Spear worked great. Tip stayed tight. Not too much flex. All around best spear for the money."
(5-foot one piece fiber glass spear): "It is good to have such a fine pole spear that was made here in America, by American hands. This pole spear is a great spear for the money and will no doubt bring many years of spear fishing activity to my life. The spear has plenty of thrust and power, gliding through the water upon release and is accurate when spearing fish. For anyone wanting to get back to the essence and primitive quality of spear fishing, this is the way to go."
(5-foot one piece fiber glass spear): "This thing is terrific. I'm not going to go too far in depth because its just a rod with a metal tip but this really compares to a high-class pole spear. I love all the real stainless steel on it and the fact you can change tips. only downside is you have to make a grip for it. you get more than you pay for and its made in the great america."
The following videos include some unconventional ways to spear fish using a spearfishing pole. There are plenty of other YouTube videos that show deep water / open water spear fishing of all sizes and many species of fish.
In a Doomsday survival scenario, spear fishing opportunities such as those shown in the first five videos below would be more relevant to the average prepper that does not have access to the ocean or large body of water, but they may have access to a pond, creek, swamp, marsh, or river.
The following videos show you how to make primitive fishing spears with a knife and minimal materials.
