Why you might need it
Traveling in the summer or winter can present challenges for maintaining medications such as insulin or EpiPens. Leaving your medication unprotected from heat in a car on a sunny day or getting lost while hiking could prove to be a disaster.
Power outages that occur when outside temperatures are hot or cold can also present a challenge to maintain the viability of medications. Even worse, an extended power outage for days, weeks, or longer could occur if caused by an natural disaster or unexpected Doomsday scenario.
The Frio is a cooling case that could be very beneficial in any of these situations. Just ask former Amazing Race winner Nat Strand, a Type 1 diabetic, that used a Frio on her journey around the world. Click here to read her story: Nat Strand's Amazing Race.
Even if you are perfectly healthy, if you are stocking a medical kit as a prepper or survivalist, having a Frio could be helpful for others in your network who have medications and medical conditions such as diabetes, but they are unprepared.
It can be a challenge keeping insulin vials or pens and other medications such as EpiPens at the correct temperature so that they are viable when needed. Extreme heat or cold will destroy the potency of these and some other medications.
The Frio Insulin Cooling Wallet provides a highly effective yet low cost solution to the problem of keeping insulin at safe temperatures without the need for refrigeration.
Frio cooling cases can also be used for other medications that can be stored at room temperature such as glaucoma eye drops, growth hormone, anaphylactic shock therapies, etc.
Users of medication other than insulin are advised to check with their doctor or pharmacist or the manufacturer’s information leaflet for the specific medications concerning safe storage requirements.
At a high level, how does the Frio cooling case work? The Frio is activated by immersing it in cold water for the time interval indicated in the instructions. This time will vary depending on the size of the wallet and will be between 5 to 20 minutes.
The pouch is now cool enough to store insulin for a minimum of 45 hours. If used properly the Frio can keep insulin between 64°F and 79°F, well below the 86°F limit to keep insulin safe and viable. The best way to store insulin depends on when you intend to use it.
The insulin you are currently using on a daily basis should be kept at room temperature. Not only is room temperature insulin more comfortable to inject, but it remains stable and potent for at least 28 days unless it is exposed to temperatures that exceed 86°F or go below 36°F.
If you anticipate room temperatures to be outside that range, it’s best to keep the insulin in the refrigerator. Insulin intended for future use should be kept in a refrigerator at a temperature between 36°F to 46°F. This includes any unused pre-filled pens and insulin vials. Any colder and the insulin will freeze and become unusable.
EpiPens are used to treat severe allergic reactions and have a more restrictive temperature range (compared to insulin). EpiPens must be stored in temperatures between 59°F to 86°F to remain safe and viable.

How does the Frio Insulin Wallet Work?
FRIO insulin cooling wallets will allow you to carry insulin or other diabetes injectibles at safe temperatures using only water and air. The Frio works using a Law of Physics that states as water is evaporating (drying), it is cooling.
This evaporation process creates a cooling effect inside the Frio wallet, and the crystals in the Frio that are holding water ensure that this process is long lasting. Frio cooling cases keep insulin at safe temperatures for a minimum of 45 hours (5+ times longer than ice packs) in constant environmental temperatures that exceed 100°F.
On the flip side, Frio offers the same insulating properties to prevent insulin from freezing as well.

"For the insulin user. Finally something to keep my insulin at the correct temp. I was gone for a business trip for one week. It was perfect."
"Must have in the sun. Great product keeps insulin cool all day long in 105 degree weather."
"Kept my wife's insulin cool on our last road trip on the motorcycle with time in triple digit heat until we could get to the resort with a refrigerator and this enclosed in the tour pack space with other items of cloths and misc. Worked as promised."
"Fits four insulin pens in pouch. kept them cool for my entire trip. Never felt moist. No worries carrying the pouch in my purse."
"I love using Frio products. We traveled across the country with the frio, and our insulin stayed exactly the right temperature. I carried insulin pens and vials. There was no problem with airport security. We were in very hot weather, and a couple of times the frio was left in the car. I checked it each time, and the insulin inside was cool to the touch. You do have to make sure to follow the directions for use, and soak the packs for the required time. Also, they can't be packed in an enclosed space, so I kept them at the top of my tote bag. Frio is a great product; I wouldn't travel without it!"
"Wish I had this sooner! As a frequent traveler for business and pleasure I was looking for a way to not have to carry around an ice pack for an upcoming vacation in Italy. I came across the Frio and couldn't be more pleased! If you follow the directions exactly, it will keep your insulin cold as long as you need it to. I used it for 2 straight weeks in Italy and had no problems. I also had no problems at the airport - just took it out and put it in the bin with my other belongings. I am so glad I found this product - no more ice packs for me!"
"I bought this recently for my parents and find this very useful. This holds cool for two days (believe me.. 48 hours full) despite out heat beat trip in our car. A must for anyone who wishes to keep medicines cool and stable. I will recommend this for anyone."
"I got the product very quickly and then tested it out. I was very surprised on how it stayed cold and also on how long it stayed that way. Very true that it is not like having it in the frig but it did stay cool enough to keep my insulin cool. It stayed active for a good 2+ days and then when it finally dried out it was very easy to store. I will definitely try this on the next trip I take."
"I have had to travel with biomed drugs that needed refrigeration for almost 15 years, and this is The Best....A 12 hour flight to Europe would have been impossible, but with the Frio, I just flew both ways with extended layovers, and it was still relatively cool at the end. Not icy cold, but then they're not supposed to be, just cool. I admit, I kinda panicked when I touched it at my destination and found the outside of the pack room temp, but the inside was still cool."
"I have had nothing but good luck with my Frio. It has gone with me to Britain, Italy, and in the next few months will accompany me to Poland and Greece. I have also taken it camping with me in the North Carolina summer heat without any problem at all. It has always remained cool inside, regardless of the outside temperature, for at least 48 hours (usually longer) before I have to recharge it. It is now four years old and, while it takes a bit longer than ten minutes for the initial charge, still working as well as before."
